Skype for Business: FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions about Skype for Business.
What is Skype for
Skype for Business is an easy-to-use interface that allows users to communicate through text chat, voice calls, video calls and online meetings. You can use Skype for Business from nearly any Windows PC or mobile device (Lync on Macs or mobile devices), on campus or anywhere in the world you have internet access.
How does Skype for
Skype for Business is set-up to work either for ad hoc connections to other users or by using the Outlook calendar for scheduled meetings. Meetings can include audio, video and/or sharing of PPT or other documents (content).
What is meant by
Skype-to-Skype communication is a term used to denote a direct connection between two Skype for Business clients for the purposes of voice, video, chat and/or desktop sharing. WSU’s Skype for Business service does not replace your WSU telephone service, so calls can only be made to other Skype for Business users at this time.
Do I have to request
to use Skype for Business?
Because meetings are scheduled from your Outlook calendar, there is no request form. You do need to have an @wsu.edu mailbox to be able to use all of the Skype for Business service functionality. This also makes it a great option for ad hoc and last minute meetings.
Does Skype for
Business work on all of the WSU campuses?
Will Skype for Business be available to students?
No, not as part of the initial rollout. It is possible that this will be implemented in the future.
Is Skype for Business
the same as AMS videoconferencing?
No. Skype for Business and the AMS Polycom service are different services. There is limited interaction between Skype for Business and the AMS Polycom service, which may be improved upon in the future.
Which is better to
use for my meeting, Skype for Business or videoconferencing (AMS)?
Skype for Business is a great solution to allow people to meet from separate locations, or to allow remote people to join in a meeting in a room that has a client setup with a web cam, external video display, and microphone. Large conference rooms should have dedicated video and audio conferencing equipment that is compatible with Skype for Business setup before using Skype for Business in that scenario. Using the Skype for Business phone bridge in a large conference room is another option. If you have an AMS Polycom meeting room or classroom, or are using AMS videoconferencing for instruction, then the AMS service is a great solution for video conferencing.
Does changing my
email address affect Skype for Business?
Skype for Business uses your primary WSU email address for log in and in place of a phone number for Skype-to-Skype voice calls. Changing your primary email address (Skype for Business login) can cause issues with Skype for Business’s “presence” function and with reoccurring Skype for Business online meetings you have already scheduled.

Skype for Business can be used without a microphone for IM, presence information, file sharing, desktop sharing, and many other features. You will need at least a microphone for audio connections on your computer. You can use a normal telephone to dial into a meeting if you do not have a microphone on your computer. Video conferencing requires a camera on your computer.
